Dominica Travel Guide
Dominica is often mistaken as a short term for Dominican Republic. But the
country of Dominica is a different island than the latter. Dominica is located
in the Caribbean near the neighboring islands of Guadeloupe and
Martinique.
This small country is also known as the "Nature Island of Caribbean". Dominica
is the seventh heaven for nature lovers, thrill seekers and of course people who
wanted to get away from the noise and pollution of the busy city streets.
It is abundant in lush mountain peaks that soar up to 5,000 feet. You can find
the highest mountains in the Eastern Caribbean here in Dominica. There is a lot
of remaining untouched paradise wanting to be discovered. Several greener than
green rainforests, sparkling lakes, stunning water falls and relaxing hot
springs are only few of the natural beauties of Dominica. The Morne Trois Pitons
National Park is one of the most visited tourist spots in Dominica. It is a
rainforest varying from fertile jungles to stunning cloud forests that covers
the Morne Trois Piton slops. In 1998, this national park was recognized by
UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Another natural tourist attraction in Dominica
is the Victoria Waterfall. It is famous for the milky white appearance of the
water brought by the minerals in it. The Victoria Waterfall is considered as the
most photographic waterfall in the island of Dominica. The waterfall was formed
from the White River cascading over the cliff going down to the warm pool below.
The island was so splendid, that it caught the attention of the producers and
movie makers of Hollywood. This is the setting of the notorious movie Pirates of
the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest, lead by Johnny Depp. The island was so
irresistible that they decided to shoot several scenes for the third Pirates of
the Caribbean as well.
Dominica has a diverse culture of West Indian, African and of course, the native
Caribbean. This combination of cultures manifests on their customs, language,
cuisines, art and feasts. Dominica celebrates wonderful and colourful festivals
as they celebrate different events every year. The most festive season in
Dominica happens every february or march. It is the Carnival or as they call it
"The Real Mas". It is a pre-Lenten celebration filled with parades, huge
costumes, loud music, talent and beauty of the local women of Dominica. Aside
from that, the Watersports Association in Dominica hosts a dive fest annually to
inform the public of the proper diving techniques and to showcase the island's
thriving marine life as well.
Don't worry if you haven't booked a hotel at Dominica before you finally decided
to go. Aside from the luxurious hotels, the island is dotted with villas facing
the Caribbean Sea. Through these accommodations, you have the chance to be
mesmerized by the rugged coastlines, one of a kind volcanic black sand beaches
and soothing sound of the splashing waves. There are also accommodations located
at the mountain top and at the center of several rainforests for those who want
to get close to nature.
